It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter. Proverbs 25:2 KJV
It is God’s privilege to conceal things and the king’s privilege to discover them. Proverbs 25:2 NLT
And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honourable man; all that he saith cometh surely to pass: now let us go thither; peradventure he can shew us our way that we should go. 1 Samuel 9:6 KJV
The servant said to him, “Look here, in this city there is a man of God, and the man is held in honor; everything that he says comes true. Now let us go there; perhaps he can advise us about our journey [and tell us where we should go].” 1 Samuel 9:6 AMP
The servant answered, “Wait! In this town there is a holy man who is highly respected because everything he says comes true. Let’s go to him, and maybe he can tell us where we can find the donkeys.” 1 Samuel 9:6 GNB
Now the donkeys belonging to Saul’s father Kish were lost, and Kish said to his son Saul, “Take one of the servants with you and go and look for the donkeys.” 1 Samuel 9:3 NLT
There were two crucial, commendable decisions that Saul made in the above passage: (1) he obeyed his father and took a servant with him; (2) he made an informed, correct decision in the choice of the servant that he chose to go with him. The servant advised Saul that they seek for the right kind of help instead of going back without anything to show for it.
We all need people in our lives – the right kind of people. People that will help and encourage us to go on, to go far. The kind of people that will open our eyes to see what we did not see before, people that will point us in the right direction. You need your family members, friends, and peers, mentors, people that will not let you give up on your dream. The right people will not hoard relevant information from you. You can imagine if this very servant had not accompanied Saul. This servant was not ready to go back home without having positive results to show for their labor.
Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we? And the servant answered Saul again, and said, Behold, I have here at hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver: that will I give to the man of God, to tell us our way. 1 Samuel 9:7-8 KJV
Saul was ill-prepared for this journey. No foresight whatsoever. He was not prepared to meet anyone; much more the prophet of God, but the servant was well prepared. He had what was needed and he willingly shared his resources with Saul regardless of his servant position. He was not a servant in his mindset, he was a leader. When you train yourself to think like a leader, it is a matter of time before a physical opportunity presents itself and demands for what has been brewing on your inside that you can give to your world.
Furthermore, I presume that Saul and his father must have treated the servants well, for this particular servant to be so willing to give from the little he earned as a servant. One crucial lesson here is not to look down, disregard, or treat one’s subordinates shabbily. You never know how those you feel are lesser than you can bring great blessings to you in the future. Some people have maltreated their servants or subordinates and unknowingly pushed away those that can assist them in unpleasant situations.
It is also wisdom to note that you should not go empty-handed to a man of God. The heavens are automatically opened upon you when you give to a called servant of God.
And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the seer: go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me today, and tomorrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thine heart. And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father’s house? 1 Samuel 9:19-20 KJV
As for the donkeys that were lost three days ago, don’t worry about them; they have already been found. But who is it that the people of Israel want so much? It is you — you and your father’s family.” 1 Samuel 9:20 GNB
Isaac said, “How did you find it so quickly, my son?” Jacob answered, “The LORD your God helped me to find it.” Genesis 27:20 GNB
Isaac asked, “How did you find it so quickly, my son?” “The LORD your God put it in my path!” Jacob replied. Genesis 27:20 NLT
What Saul had been searching for about three days had been found. What he labored on without any results had been found. What he had spent his strength, energy and time on had already been found. He would never have known if he had not gone to the right place.
